"You don't necessarily have to be a good golfer to be a good putter, but you have to be a good putter to be a good golfer." Tony Lema

Many consider putting to be the toughest part of the game to master. It takes consistency and practice to see a difference. There are some mental notes and things you can be aware of to help you improve.

Grain Judge putts and chips in relation to which the grass grows. This "grain" can be distinguished by looking for the shiny part of the grass, the part that reflects the sun. A down grain putts faster and is something you can be aware of.

Give it a little more power when putting against the grain to avoid being left short.

Take off a little power when putting with the grain to avoid being left long.

Slope / Contour The slope of the land. Most greens are built higher at the back and slope down at the front. By assuming it slopes down from back to front you'll be more right than wrong. Putting from the back you'll be aiming downhill. Putting from the front you'll be putting uphill.

A golfer friend of mine, Steve Evers, quipped that when you watch the old timers they hold a golf club high loosely between their fingers letting it behave like a plumb bob. It reminded him of an old timer, Axel, we used to work. We built concrete forms on the largest construction job in New Jersey that year. He'd bark out orders and wouldn't move much. At the end of the the day he'd be covered with tobacco juice from his chew. He would hold his plumb bob in the air, without moving from his spot, squint with his good eye and accurately make certain the walls were plumb.

Putts running with the grain will break more when putting cross-slope. When putting downhill with the grain balls run fast and break more.

Putts running against the grain will break less when putting cross-slope. When putting uphill against the grain balls run slow and break less.

Basics Don't break your wrists when putting - you loose control. You want to use your shoulders, arms and the face of the putter. Hold the club firm, loose and jiggle in the wrist.

Bend your knees slightly, make sure your arms, shoulders, knees and feet are all parallel with your target line. You have to be square to the target otherwise your aim drifts. This is a common mistake with beginners.

Practice Practice putting with your eyes closed to develop feel and consistency. The urge to lift your head too soon will throw off you and defeat your stroke. A simple drill of hitting a number 10 foot putts with your eyes closed will help develop your feel and get your mind off the mechanics of the stroke.

Strategy Try to make your approach below the hole so that it is an easier, uphill putt for birdie. On severe back to front slope choke down on the club a bit. Try to leave your approach shots on the better side of the hole.

If you think that golf instruction books are a waste of money because none of them has ever helped to improve your game, you may be interested to know that Swing Machine Golf was specifically designed to succeed where other books have failed. The instruction in Swing Machine Golf  was written, tested, re-written and re-tested over a two-year period until Paul Wilson and co-author/publisher Ken Steven were convinced it could be easily understood and mastered by those who read it without the need for private lessons.
